The future of hydroponics: Exploring the NFT System

Dive into the Future of Hydroponics: Exploring the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) System

In the world of hydroponics, innovation is constantly pushing the boundaries of sustainable agriculture. One such breakthrough is the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) system, revolutionizing the way we grow plants with less soil and without any soil! In this blog post, we will talk about the ins and outs of NFT and how it is helping to transform the way we cultivate crops.

What is NFT?

The NFT system is a hydroponic method that uses a thin film of nutrient-rich water flowing over the plant roots, providing them with a constant supply of essential elements. Unlike traditional soil-based farming, NFT systems use a recirculating system to conserve water and maximize nutrient absorption, resulting in faster growth and higher yields.

How does NFT work?

In an NFT system, plants are grown in channels and gullies with a nutrient solution continuously flowing over the roots. This layer of solution (film) ensures the roots receive optimal oxygen and nutrient intake. The extra solution is collected, filtered, and recirculated, creating a sustainable and efficient closed-loop system.

What are the advantages of NFT?

There are quite a few advantages of this farming method that make it sustainable and environmentally friendly.
– NFT systems use significantly less water compared to traditional farming methods.
– The precise control over the nutrient concentration ensures that plants receive the exact amount of nutrients they need for optimal growth.
– NFT systems can be designed vertically, making them ideal in places with limited space and enabling high-density cultivation.
– If growing without any soil at all, the risk of soil-borne diseases and pests is greatly reduced, leading to healthier and more vibrant plans.
– Setting up an NFT system indoors allows for year-round cultivation, regardless of the external climate conditions.

Want to set up your own NFT system?

Here are some key steps to get you started if you are interested in trying out NFT for yourself:

Design: Start by planning the layout and dimensions of your NFT channels, consider what available space you currently have as well as which crops you plan to grow.
Nutrient Solution: When preparing a nutrient solution make sure it is tailored to the specific needs of your chosen crops.
Installation: Setting up your channels on a slope is a must, you only need a slight inclination in order for the film to flow smoothly.
Planting: Make sure the plant’s roots are long enough to make contact with the film before transplanting them into the NFT system.
Maintenance: It is so important to monitor the pH and nutrient levels of your water tank, this should be done daily and adjusted as needed.

Where are NFT systems currently applied?

Commercial Greenhouses: Greenhouse growers have adopted the NFT for the efficient production of leafy greens, herbs, and baby greens.
Urban Farming: Vertical NFT systems are perfect for urban farming, allowing cultivation in limited spaces such as rooftops, balconies, and a wide array of indoor environments.
Research and Education: NFT systems are an excellent teaching tool for students and researchers to explore hydroponics and plant nutrition.
Greens Bali: We currently use our NFT system to grow edible flowers and baby greens including spinach, baby romaine, and curly lettuce.
